Use of Artesunate:

For treatment of falciparum malaria (dosage of Artesunate proposed by the World Health Organization):

For adults: 7 day treatment course with a total dose of 800 mg Artesunate.

200 mg of Artesunate on day one (four 50mg Artesunate tablets taken together) and 100 mg of Artesunate (two 50mg Artesunate tablets taken together) on days 2 to 7.

For prevention of malaria:

Because Artesunate is rapidly eliminated from the body, and because it is most effective against immature early stages of the falciparum gametocyte especially on the 4th day after infection, the recommended prophylaxis is 100 mg given every 7 days for short stays in malaria danger areas.

A complete 7 day treatment course is recommended on leaving the malaria area.

Storage of Artesunate:

Store Artesunate in the refrigerator or in a cool dark place.

Side Effects of Artesunate:

Pharmacological studies have shown that artesunate, given at a dose equivalent to at least 50 times the therapeutic dose for humans , did not affect the central nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory systems in the animal models tested.

When travelling to a malaria danger area use all precautions to prevent getting bitten by mosquitoes. If these fail and you get the symptoms of malaria, your doctor may wish to prescribe Artesunate to treat the disease.
