Artesunate is a natural extract of Artemisia annua, (qing hao or sweet Annie) a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine. Because Artesunate is extracted from a plant, and not produced synthetically, the drug is still difficult to obtain in many areas of the world.

Artesunate has many advantages over other antimalarial drugs. It is extremely fast acting with a fever clearance time of 20 to 24 hours. This is especially important for treatment of patients with cerebral malaria.

Artesunate is also one of the least toxic antimalarial drugs for humans and is rapidly metabolized and eliminated from the system within 45 to 60 minutes.
